Does a Hair Transplant Leave Scars?

Raya Brodskiy, MD

Yes. Both FUE and FUT leave scars. They leave different kinds of scars.

Before you choose a method, ask what the back of your head may look like after it heals.

What kind of scar does FUT leave?

With FUT, a doctor takes a strip of skin with hair from the scalp. This leaves a scar shaped like a line.

Hair around the scar may help hide it. But a very short haircut may show the line. No one can promise that the scar will stay thin or be easy to hide.

What kind of scars does FUE leave?

With FUE, a doctor takes out small groups of hair through small, round cuts. Each cut can leave a small scar.

There is no long line, but that does not mean there are no scars. The small marks may show when hair is cut very short.

What makes scars more easy to see?

Several things matter:

  • How your skin heals.
  • How short you wear your hair.
  • How much hair is taken out.
  • How much hair is left to help cover the marks.

Taking too much hair from one area can also leave a thin or patchy look.

What should I ask?

Ask to see photos of healed donor areas, not just the new hairline. Try to see examples with hair like yours.

Ask: “How might this look with the haircut I want?”

A scar is one part of the choice. You also need to think about your donor hair and long-term plan.
